On June 26, Mr. Roger Lewis published his thoughts
on the "Housing
Strategies" effort undertaken by the AIA
- Houston in association with others. Lewis authored the final draft,
and
the article appeared in the Washington Post.
My personal comments on this unfortunate article
are as follows:
1. Houston Problems are excessively magnified
since the Author is not
familiar with typical local solutions. It portrays Houston in a very
negative light.
2. The article is destructive to Houston's reputation.
3. The Author sees Houston only through his own
vision of what makes cities,
including his heavy tilt towards zoning and land use controls, and he
is
trying to force Houston into his own mold.
4. His intonation on the growth of hispanics
is misguided in thinking their
growth rate will become problematic for Houston. Second generation Hispanics
have proven they become typical American Citizens and have the same
local
concerns, and they become part of the solution.
As the article appeared in the Washington Post
and as the paper has national
audience, the article is a great disservice to Houston and all the local
talent that participated in this effort.
One would hope that in the future, and when similar
studies are
contemplated, that it would Houston architects and concerned citizens
who
address these issues and make the recommendations, in lieu of "the
experts
from out of town".
