WHR Architects Renovation of Morristown Memorial Hospital Simon Level 5 Awarded LEED Gold

At Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey, the renovation of a single floor, Simon Level 5, has received a Gold LEED Commercial Interiors certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The 14,070 square foot project, the renovation of a 1948 semi private room bed floor into an in-patient unit focused on oncology patients, encompasses 30 patient rooms and support areas including a nurses station, pharmacy, a staff lounge, two waiting rooms and administrative offices. Although small in scope the project has had high impact at the hospital, demonstrating that sustainability can be achieved despite the challenges of being located in an existing building.

"Early in the design process, the hospital decided that the Simon Level 5 renovation would be an example of green building design at Morristown Memorial Hospital," Charles Griffin, Senior Principal at WHR. "They recognized that the project would establish a precedent and have positive effects on the hospital as a whole. They are to be commended for their long-term thinking."

Located in the Simon Building, which serves as the main entrance leading into the Morristown Memorial Hospital campus, the project comprises three patient room wings connected by a centralized nursing station and elevator lobby. Patient rooms are located along the perimeter of the building, making them easily accessible to nursing staff. Newly installed air-handling units on the building's rooftop and deck-to-deck wall partition provide patient room ventilation and air conditioning.

The project is designed to 25% water use reduction and 21.28% lighting power density reduction. In addition, 77% of construction waste was recycled and diverted away from the landfill. Sustainable project materials and high indoor environmental quality (IEQ) were a focus of the design and construction, resulting in a12.6% materials with recycled content, 61% manufactured regionally, and 13 of 35 LEED points achieved by the project coming from the IEQ category. The hospital's decision to reuse all of the patient beds resulted in 68% furniture reuse for the project, thus capitalizing on existing resources to conserve the new. The project's urban location with a transportation network and community connectivity also contributed towards the LEED certification.

In an effort to make the entire Simon building more energy efficient, improvements were made to other portions of the building outside the immediate project scope. The two new air-handling units were sized not only serve the 5th floor, but to improve the indoor air quality of floors 2-4 as well. Improvements were also made on the Simon building rooftop where fifty-three percent of the building's rooftop was replaced with a new, high-reflective, roofing material.

"Small projects like this are increasingly important in achieving bigger sustainability goals, notes Komal Kotwal, who led the sustainability effort for WHR. When tight budgets restrict new building. We can still make significant, if incremental, progress with projects like Simon5."

Construction Underway on New Mixed-Use Community in South Austin

Meeks + Partners is pleased to announce after much collaboration with South Carolina based developer, Greystar, that construction is now underway on a pivotal mixed-use commercial/residential urban community on the south side of Austin, just blocks from St. Edwards University. Completion is expected in the summer of 2013.

Developed as a mixed-use, urban infill property and situated on almost five acres, Oak Meadows will feature staggered three to five stories of residential living built over 4,800 square feet of retail and 6,772 square feet of amenity space on the corner of South 1st Street, the future transit corridor leading into downtown Austin, and Post Road Drive. The 335 luxury apartments range in size from 560 square feet to 1,400 square feet. Special care went in to designing the mixed-use property around stands of existing live oak trees preserving them for the community and future tenants to enjoy. To take advantage of the sites unique topography, three distinctly designed units with downtown Austin views will overhang the entrance to the property, further defining the façade which features an array of contemporary building forms, massing and materials which also enable the structure to blend in with the residential neighborhood.

The dual podium and wrap design incorporates three and four level slab on grade construction, as well as a two-level concrete podium both built around a six level precast garage. This efficient design is a cost effective solution that maximizes unit densities on the challenging site, provides accessibility and convenience for the residents and further enables the integration of the property into the community. The residents and surrounding community will benefit from the retail and commercial offerings on the ground level.

WHR Architects Promotes Joel Colwell, AIA, to Principal

WHR Architects is pleased to announce the promotion of Joel Colwell, AIA, to principal. Colwell joined the firm in 2004, having spent the previous ten years on the client side as a facilities/project manager for a hospital in Louisiana.

"Joel's strong personal understanding of the owner's perspective has proven to be highly valuable," said David Watkins, FAIA, WHR chairman. "His leadership on projects creates confidence in our clients, inspires his teammates, and produces superior healthcare facilities. His promotion is well-earned."

With over 30 years of experience, Colwell has managed large-scale, complex projects for major healthcare systems as well as challenging smaller renovations and additions - all with notable success. "WHR has been a great fit for me," said Colwell. "The firm's focus on client service and responsiveness really resonates with healthcare owners and administrators. It is the foundation for our relationships as trusted advisors to our clients."

An excellent example of Colwell's project leadership is his work for Stamford Health System in Stamford, Connecticut, where he has been responsible for the management of multiple projects over seven years. Many of these projects were the result of "make way" projects implemented from the facilities master plan developed by WHR for Stamford Hospital in 2004. These projects set the stage for the development of the new specialty building on campus that includes diagnostic and treatment functions. Recently, the hospital authorized WHR to proceed with the horizontal and vertical expansion to the previously designed Diagnostic & Treatment base building, adding seven bed floors and a lobby expansion.

A graduate of Louisiana State University, where he received his bachelor of architecture degree, Colwell is a member of the American Institute of Architecture and is certified by the NCARB.

Among WHRs recent and current healthcare projects are The Methodist Hospital Research Institute and their Outpatient Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center's Mid- Campus Building One, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Research Park Complex, Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences Building and Dental School - all in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Other projects include Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, New Jersey; Ocean Medical Center, Elderly Care Unit, Brick, New Jersey; University of New Mexico, Sandoval Regional Medical Center, Rio Rancho, New Mexico; and The University of Texas, Health Science Center at Tyler, Texas.

First Building at The Woodlands Research Forest Lakeside Campus Completes

Research Forest Lakeside - Building 2 has recently completed construction. The design is a result of a collaboration between Ziegler Cooper Architects and Odell Associates (ZC+O). The 3-story 68,000 gross square foot speculative office building contains the following features: Lakeside vehicular access, gently curving lake front facade with full-height glass and 9' ceiling heights, LEED Silver Certification, gracious lake front lobby, forest preserves and native landscaping, efficient and flexible footprint suitable for single tenant or multi-tenant users, and Class A common area finishes.

ZC+O completed master planning and design services for the 76-acre, heavily-wooded site fronting Lake Woodlands. Ten office buildings and convenience retail are planned and will total over 1,798,398 square feet upon completion. ZC+O splayed four of the eight new office buildings along the lakeside to gain unobstructed views and efficient solar orientation. The long facade of each building faces southward, placing the short ends of each building east and west, minimizing solar heat gain. Sustainable considerations were at the center of all the design decisions and buildings will be seeking a LEED Silver Certification or better. The plan allows the development to function as independently addressed buildings, or potentially, as a single corporate campus.

Designs for the addition of an 8-story and 12-story building are currently under way.

Ziegler Cooper Architects is Giving Thanks by Giving Back.

The Dress for Success Houston Headquarters kicked off with the groundbreaking on October 25th 2011. Dress for Success (DFS) is a not-for-profit organization which promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. After DFS grew out of their current facilities, Ziegler Cooper provided pro-bono design services for a new 14,000 square foot office, warehouse and dress shop addressing the organizations future needs. The site is located on Eastside Street near Richmond which is close to the future University Metro Line and centrally located relative to Houston.

"From the very beginning, Kurt, Jim and the ZCA team worked hard to understand the "why" of our mission and the "how" of the way we go about our daily work of serving over 5,000 Houston women each year. Everything flowed from there to create a building that serves the needs of our organization both beautifully and functionally. Due to the professionalism, expertise and caring personalities of the project design team, the process was collaborative, engaging and quite honestly, great fun!" said Nancy Levicki, President and Co-Founder of Dress for Success Houston.

The design concept blends elements of sustainable design with DFS's desire for a corporate setting. Rain water collection, abundant natural light, low water usage, high efficient mechanical systems, a green roof and access to green space are some of the buildings sustainable features. The corporate setting is achieved through the use of simple concrete tilt-up exterior walls, large expanses of glass with vertical and horizontal sun shading devices, a two story entrance lobby and flexible work spaces.

VLK Architects' Office Receives LEED Certification

VLK Architects has received LEED Silver Certification for Commercial Interiors (CI) for its Fort Worth office from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is the USGBC's leading rating system for designing and constructing the world's greenest, most energy efficient and high performing buildings.

The West 7th development, which houses the firm's office, was designed to be LEED for Core & Shell, which gave VLK the head start on finishing out the area for LEED Silver Certification CI. "VLK is a leader in sustainable design in DFW and we wanted to make sure we represented that in our office," states VLK Project Director Sloan Harris, AIA. "It's important that we reflect our company's vision within the office, provide a sense of environmental responsibility to the company and maximize the comfort levels and well-being of our staff."

Sustainable elements within the office space include the daylight harvesting system, which saves considerable amounts of lighting, as well as the secondary energy metering system. This system allows the company to monitor energy consumption in lighting, conventional outlets and work stations, to maximize the overall energy output in the office. These components preserve precious resources while minimizing costs, which embraces LEED certification standards.

"The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on nonsustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "The work of innovative building projects such as VLK's Fort Worth office is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement."

Harris hopes this achievement will permanently link VLK with sustainable design efforts. "Attaining this certification demonstrates to both our current and potential clients another example of VLK's commitment to sustainable design."

iProspect Selects VLK Architects for New Office Design

Global digital marketing agency iProspect has selected VLK Architects, Inc. for design services on its new Fort Worth office.

Company growth prompted iProspect to make the decision to move to a new space. The company will be moving from its original location around the Stockyards in Fort Worth to the revitalized Cultural District area, off West 7th Street. "We've been in the Stockyards for 10 years and have loved that space," says iProspect Managing Director Price Glomski. "We want to keep the ambiance from our Stockyards' office location and we know VLK will be able to carry that design to our new office."

iProspect's new office, estimated around 25,000 square feet, will focus on modernization and giving their employees a good living space. The open layout will allow employees to focus on group orientation and team building. A giant kitchen will be created to serve as the centerpiece of the office. In addition, the company wants to incorporate sustainable elements into the design. "We admire what VLK has done so far with green design and we want to embrace that in our new office," states Glomski.

Serving as a leader in the digital marketing industry, iProspect works with some of the largest brands in the world. The company currently has 39 offices in 27 countries. The Fort Worth location, previously in operation as Range Online Media, was absorbed into iProspect in 2008. The move to their new office space will allow iProspect to help develop their new, fresh brand in the North Texas area.

VLK Architects Finishes Renovations at Texas A&M University-Kingsville

The start of the fall semester meant a new beginning for a recently renovated facility at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The newly renamed Biological & Health Sciences Building provides a fresh look to the former Biology and Earth Sciences Building. Houston firm VLK Architects handled the renovations.

The facility, continuously opened during the course of the renovations, underwent noticeable changes, in order to create a more "student-friendly" atmosphere. Modifications included renovating the reception/common area into a student lounge, adding graphics to the facility, relocating the administration area to a more central location within the building, moving all the lab equipment to a shared location, creating millwork display cases for the corridors and installing full-height tack wall surfaces in the building. This fulfilled the University's vision of providing a sense of home to its students.

About VLK Architects
With offices in Fort Worth and Houston, Texas, VLK Architects provides architecture, planning and interior design services to K-12, Higher Education, Corporate and Institutional clients throughout Texas.

Neubek, FAIA, FHFI, CFM, LEED AP, EDAC , has been selected as the keynote speaker for the 22nd Annual Healthcare Facility Project Development Symposium, being held at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, 23-27 October, 2011.

Kurt, a Fellow of the Health Facility Institute and Director of Healthcare for the Houston office of PageSoutherlandPage, will speak at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, 24 October. His address, "Trends in Healthcare Design - What We're Seeing Now," will feature a survey of recent healthcare projects from the United States and abroad, assembled from multiple PageSoutherlandPage offices. It will provide a "virtual tour" of various new and still-being-designed facilities, plus an analysis of the trends and decision drivers that shaped these facilities during 2000-2008 (a period of growth and stability) and during the recession of 2009-2011. Kurt will also look at the effects of the Affordable Care Act on healthcare facility decision-making and construction. Other topics Kurt will explore include sustainability, evidence-based design, patient safety, lean processes and commissioning.

Best known professionally for his expertise in programming and strategic facility planning, Kurt is one of the few registered architects in the country specializing in these areas, and he has programmed and planned literally tens of millions of square feet of space across the United States and abroad for a diverse array of building types. He has worked with an impressive list of healthcare clients worldwide and has been responsible for programming, planning, and delivering more than six million square feet of hospital, ambulatory, and medical office building space. Kurt is accomplished in a wide variety of analytical, decision-making and facilitating techniques, and he has the unique ability to take overwhelming amounts of data-both quantitative and qualitative-and abstract it to easily understood information that supports informed decision-making. A frequent speaker on healthcare programming and planning, he is well regarded for helping clients make strategic facility decisions.
