Rice University, Entrance 4
Stern and Bucek Architects
ABOUT THE HOME
At Rice University, undergraduate students live in campus dormitories that are identified as colleges. Each college is directed by a faculty member who lives with his or her family in separate quarters, often in a freestanding house adjacent to the college. Covered in white stucco and naturally sealed cedar siding the master's 3,200 square foot house contrasts with the brick facades of Wiess College, while the massing mirrors the horizontal expression of the college. It is set with a generous living/entertaining space on the first floor meant especially for both small and large gatherings of students and faculty. These living spaces expand into two courtyards, one from the dining area on the east side enclosed with masonry, stucco clad walls and one from the living area on the south side enclosed with the cedar siding. The second floor serves as the private living quarters for the master and his family with three bedrooms, a family room, and views into the courtyards and campus beyond. The design incorporates many sustainable features and achieved LEED for Homes Silver certification.
