5906 Grace Lane

ABOUT THE HOME

The new building, at 560 square feet, features a living area, kitchen, dining, bath, laundry, and bedroom. This house was built next to the architect's own residence to explore refined small scale living. Integrating the indoor with outdoor helps create "virtual space" extending the living areas into the landscape. The project features atypical construction materials: the primary exterior structure and interior core area are all exposed cast in place concrete and a structural steel frame allows the opposite side of the building mass to appear to "float." The frame allows for continuous upper windows that separate the folded metal roof form from the walls below creating a dialog between "heavy" and "light" building elements. The exterior is clad with diagonal wall shingles of gun metal slate tiles while the interior is covered in a variety of fine woods from ebony, ipe, tiger wood, rift cut oak, and Treefrog specialty veneers, along with various resin and glass materials.
