1814 Arbor Street
Intexure
ABOUT THE HOME
At just under 2,400 square feet, this two story house maintains the scale, rhythm, and character of the street; setting an example for how new construction can be a good neighbor. Designed specifically for and by its owner, Shawn Gottschalk. It was important to balance the need for density with greenspace. Keeping the plan to two stories maintains connections between spaces and occupants minimizing the amount of stairs to create a long-term housing solution for both young families and empty nesters. On the first floor the living area opens through a 10' sliding glass door extending the space into the landscape. The house features a number of innovative and thoughtful details. An accent wall of locally harvested wood runs vertically through the space alongside a "floating" stair, and a recycled glue-lam beam forms the counter in the powder room. Designed with sustainability and energy efficiency in mind the house utilizes superior materials to achieve an exceptionally tight building envelope, setting an example as a small, cost effective, urban house with thoughtful land use.
